Discover the Armely Schulze Organ

St Bartholomew's Church, Armley, Leeds

WE REGRET THAT THIS EVENT HAS BEEN CANCELLED. THE TWO ORGAN RECITALS WILL STILL GO AHEAD AT 11:00 AND 16:15 WITH ADMISSION PAYABLE AT THE DOOR.

DETAILS OF THESE RECITALS CAN BE FOUND ON THE BOOKING FORM (SEE BELOW).

The 1869 organ at St Bartholomew's Church, Armley (Leeds) is the finest surviving example of the late work of the Schulze organ-building company, which flourished in central Germany from 1688 - 1880 close to the important centres of Weimar and Erfurt. This Discovery Event provides an opportunity to hear music connected with the organ traditions of this region and period. Weimar itself has a rich, cultural heritage stretching back to the Middle Ages, associated with art (Cranach the Elder, Klee, Kandinsky, Feiniger, the Bauhaus movement), literature (Goethe, Herder, Schiller), philosophy (Nietzsche, Schopenhauer, Steiner), and music (J.S.Bach, Liszt, Wagner). There will be a morning recital, a guided tour of the church, a film about the organ restoration and a visit to the Armley Mills Industrial Museum. RCO Trustee and Organist of St Bartholomew’s, Professor Graham Barber leads the event, and brings the day to an exciting conclusion with a performance of Liszt's Fantasia and Fugue on the chorale Ad nos, ad salutarem undam. Coffee, lunch and tea are included in the price, and for those arriving the day before there will be an opportunity for supervised playing time on the organ.
