Organ Open Day

Saturday 23rd September 2017 (11:00 – 17:00)
English Martyrs’ Catholic School, Anstey Lane, Leicester LE4 0FJ

For young people who've ever wondered how much noise a pipe organ can make, or what all those buttons and stops are for. 

English Martyrs’ Catholic School in Leicester, with the help and support of the College, presents an afternoon of exploration for 10–14 year-olds with coaching, encouragement, challenges and a concert from Steven Grahl, an inspiring teacher and performer and Director of Music at Peterborough Cathedral.

Programme:
11:00–13:00 Masterclass for under-18s (by invitation only via local teachers)
Light lunch (for masterclass participants only)
14:00–15:30 ‘Have a go’ sessions for 10–14s; repertoire sessions for masterclass students, with Robert Gower (organist, St Barnabas Cathedral, Nottingham).
Refreshments
16:00–17:00 Extravaganza concert in which Steven will demonstrate the capabilities of the new Peter Collins instrument at English Martyrs School. The programme, designed to capture the imagination of a young audience, comprises:
J.S. Bach - Toccata and Fugue in D minor (BWV 565)
P. Whitlock - Scherzetto (Organ sonata)
L. Vierne - Carillon de Westminster
F. Mendelssohn - War March of the Priests
M. Dupré - Prelude and Fugue in G minor
I. Farrington - Movements from Animal Parade: Entrance, Giraffes, Barrel organ monkey, Hippopotamus, Alley cats, Exit

This is a free, ticketed event, but places must be reserved in advance. Parents or guardians should email their own name and postal address, together with the name and age of their child, to tickets@englishmartyrs.org, or telephone the RCO on 020 3865 6998 or English Martyrs on 0116 242 8880 (speak to Mrs Bradshaw). No previous playing experience is required, but all under-18s must be accompanied by an adult at all times.  

Fee: There is no charge for attending this event
