A chance to hear the 3 manual 19 rank Wurlitzer organ in a special 'First Encounter' concert. David Lowe will explore the resources of one of the UK's largest Wurlitzer theatre pipe organs and explain details of how music is interpreted for the instrument, how the 174 stops of the organ are used to produce the different registrations which he uses and something of the technique of playing this type of organ. Non-players, and both first time and experienced organists will be welcome to join the audience and those interested in finding out more will be welcome to ask questions and arrange a session to play the organ if they wish. As part of Heritage Open Days, Bramhall Parish Church invites you to hear – and play – the King of Instruments. This free event is part of the Royal College of Organists’ “Play the Organ” year (www.rco.org.uk/play) and is open to all ages and abilities.
Led by Alexandria Walker (Director of Music at St Michael’s) and Simon Mercer (RCO Area Accredited Teacher), the day features short organ recitals and a unique chance to try both Bramhall’s historic organ and two exhibition organs brought by Church Organ World.
Sessions at 1pm, 2pm & 3pm – each includes a 20-minute recital and 25 minutes of guided “have-a-go” time. Organs and sheet music will also be available to browse and purchase.

The Carnival of the Animals

York Minster
'First Encounter' performance.
Hear the animal kingdom brought to life inside York Minster as young listeners are guided through Camille Saint-Saëns’ The Carnival of the Animals performed on the cathedral’s Grand Organ. The perfect introduction to classical music.
The familiar and accessible composition will be accompanied by a narrator sharing fun facts about the wild animals that roam through Saint-Saëns’ creation and York Minster’s history, and will include the chance to get up-close to the organ to see how the instrument is played.
The short, family-sized exploration of the organ, given by Benjamin Morris, will take place on Wednesday 28 May at 7pm.

Tickets cost £7 for children and £10 for adults. A family ticket for two adults and two children is also available, priced at £30. Children over the age of 18 months need their own seat.

Ever wondered what it is like to play the organ? Come along, pull out all the stops and have a go! A hands on afternoon for children of all ages to try out the Cathedral organ with a little help from our organists. No musical experience needed.
Booking recommended to avoid disappointment. Please book each child for a 15 minute slot, to allow us to give each child a chance to play. There will also be other organ-related activities provided by the Derby and District Organists' Association, including a model organ and design your own organ case!
We finish with a concert of popular classics at 3.30pm, given by our Director of Music.

Join us to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the installation of the pipe organ and the restoration of St Cadoc's church, and find out about the on-going organ repair project.
Drop by between 9am and 5pm on Saturday 26th April to take a tour inside the 1875 W.G. Vowles pipe organ which has been (mostly) restored after being out of action for decades due to water damage. Come and admire the amazing craftmanship of this wonderful instrument and talk to the team involved in restoring it. The Royal School of Church Music Director's Challenge

25 hours of organ playing. Hugh Morris, Director of the RSCM, will be playing the organ for a marathon 25 hours in 2025 to mark Play the Organ Year. This will be streamed on the RSCM YouTube channel. There will be a mix of organ music and hymns, with a series of special guests appearing each hour. Hugh has also challenged himself to learn a new piece for the marathon organ play. Play The Organ Year In The Villages

St Andrew's Church, West Hatch and St John's Church, Hatch Beauchamp
This free, double event will offer an insight into the musical life of village churches and how this may differ from worship in towns and cities. The first event will be to St Andrew's Church, West Hatch, from 10am to 12 noon. Here, a sing-along of hymns and popular songs will be held, with the organ kindly accompanied by the band of St Peter's Church, Staple Fitzpaine. Printed lyrics and refreshments are planned, as are ample opportunities for attendees to try out the pipe organ and hear of its unusual history. After a two-hour lunch break, the action will move over the hill to St John's Church, Hatch Beauchamp, where a musical workshop will be held by a local choir. Accessible songs will be taught acapella, with percussion instruments provided for the young. Once again, all are warmly invited to try the resident pipe organ. This event will take place from 2pm to 4pm.

The King of Instruments: a concert for children

Come to hear ten very short, different pieces of music played by Ann Burgess on the pedal organ and box organ at Christ Church. Guided listening. This Frome Festival concert will last 25-30 minutes. Then early pianists can try playing a short piece on the beautiful box organ themselves until time runs out! Bring your music. £3 per child, free for adults but donations to church funds welcome. No unaccompanied children. (Part of the Royal College of Organists "Play the Organ Year" initiative.)

The Pianists and other interested pupils of the Top class of the local primary school, Churchfileds, the Village School visited St. Michael's on 8th July, to see, play, and learn about our 140 year old Henry Speechly Pipe organ (2M+P, 11 stop).. The pianists played some Bach and some Jazz. Non-players had the opportunity to sit on the bench and hear the organ as they pressed the keys.
