RCO Accreditation
A globally recognised standard

RCO Accreditation

RCO Accreditation provides a clear and progressive framework of recognition for organists and choral directors at every stage of their development.

It is designed to nurture as well as recognise genuine musical standards in performance and direction — combining practical musicianship with the aural, analytical and interpretative understanding that supports confident and informed musical practice.

Whether you are expanding your musical horizons, building your confidence, seeking a publicly recognised benchmark, strengthening your professional credentials, or aiming for the highest level of distinction, there is a pathway that fits your experience and ambitions.

Almost all qualifications may be entered at the level that reflects your current standard. You do not need to begin at the first stage unless that is the right place for you. Only one progression requirement applies — entry to FRCO requires ARCO — and this is clearly stated.

A clear and progressive framework

RCO Accreditation is structured in progressive levels, reflecting increasing expectations about musicianship, leadership and expertise.

The framework below shows how the qualifications relate to one another and where each sits within the overall pathway.

The framework is rigorous, but it is also supportive. It is designed to stimulate you as a musician at strategic points in your development, whether you are working on building confidence, seeking recognition for your attainments, or aiming for the highest level of distinction.

What our candidates say

“Choosing to do these exams has been one of the most rewarding things I’ve ever done and I would encourage any organist who is thinking about it to just go for it!!”— Suzanne Blagg (UK)

More than an examination

RCO Accreditation is not simply a set of examinations. It is a structured process of musical development, designed to strengthen musicianship as well as recognise it.

Each qualification combines practical performance or directing with the aural, analytical and interpretative understanding that underpins confident musical practice. Assessment is designed to be fair, transparent and helpful.
