Choral Accreditation
A pathway for choral direction

Choral Accreditation

RCO choral directing qualifications provide a clear and progressive framework for developing and recognising leadership in choral music.

From emerging choir directors building rehearsal skills to experienced musicians working at a high artistic level, the pathway supports the development of confident, informed and effective choral direction.

These qualifications combine practical directing with the musical and critical understanding that underpins successful rehearsal and performance. Each stage reflects increasing expectations of conducting technique, rehearsal management and interpretative insight.

Most candidates enter at the level that reflects their current experience and responsibilities. It is not necessary to begin at the first stage unless that is the appropriate level.

The choral accreditation pathway

The RCO choral directing pathway consists of three progressive stages.

Confident directing
Colleague Diploma in Choral Directing (CChD(RCO))

CChD recognises competent and confident musical leadership. It is designed for choir directors who are already leading rehearsals and performances and who wish to demonstrate proficiency in their practice.

Accomplished musicianship
Associate Diploma in Choral Directing (AChD(RCO))

AChD demonstrates higher-level choral directing skill and interpretative insight, and a broad and critical understanding of vocal and choral practice. It is aimed at experienced choir directors seeking a recognised qualification that reflects advanced musicianship and rehearsal management.

Please note: Regulations will be available from autumn 2026. The first deadline for applications and submissions will be 1 April 2027.
