Study trip to Arnstadt, Germany

Saturday 19th October 2024 (09:00) – Sunday 20th October 2024 (21:30)
Arnstadt, Germany

Known as the gateway to the Thuringian Forest, Arnstadt holds a special place in the early career of Johann Sebastian Bach. It was in this historic town that he began his professional career in 1703 at the age of 18, laying the foundations for an unparalleled career as an organist, composer, and church musician.

Update at 5 September: we now have one player and two observers places available.

Paying homage to Bach’s work in the town before he moved to Mühlhausen in 1708, this study trip offers a rare opportunity to walk in the musical footsteps of the young Bach. Based in the Bachkirche and led by Kirchenmusikdirektor Jörg Reddin and RCO tutor Richard Brasier, we will explore many of the skills associated with Bach’s role as the town’s principal organist. Using the church’s three organs, tuition will include classes in stylus phantasticus, improvising hymn preludes, continuo playing and repertoire coaching. There will also be a special opportunity to attend a cantata performance with choir and orchestra under the direction of Jörg Reddin as part of a Sunday service.

Time will be available to explore the town and learn more about some memorable Bach anecdotes, including his visit on foot to study with Buxtehude in Lübeck, his quarrel with his pupil Geyersbach, and the frequent criticism of his dissonant organ playing from the church authorities.

Eight places are available for advanced level players and four for observers. Those aged under 18 must be accompanied by an adult at all times. Click here to download the itinerary.
