Durham Cathedral Study Day

Saturday 31st January 2026 (10:30 – 20:30)
St. Mary the Less, South Bailey, Durham DH1 3EQ and Durham Cathedral, Durham DH1 3EH

Join the RCO for a day in and around Durham Cathedral.

There will be a mixture of organ and choral conducting tuition available; students can choose to participate in one or both of these, or simply to observe (please select the appropriate option on the booking form).

Choral conducting workshops will be led by Daniel Cook (Master of the Choristers and Organist, Durham Cathedral), with an octet of singers from St. John's College Chapel Choir. 

Organ classes will be led by Tom Bell (Concert Organist and Director, RCO North)

In the afternoon, a rehearsal with the Cathedral choir will be observed prior to attending evensong. After evensong, the Cathedral organ will be available for the organists to explore and enjoy! 

The timetable for the day will be as follows: 

1030 Welcome: St Mary the Less

1100 Organ playing class on Drake organ (see below for details)/Choral conducting workshop at St. Mary the Less

1300 Lunch (bring your own)

1400 Organ playing class on Drake organ (see below for details)/Choral conducting workshop at St. Mary the Less

1600 Break

1630 Observe evensong rehearsal

1730 Evensong

1830 Time on Cathedral organ 

2030 End

Organ classes will take place on a beautiful organ by William Drake, not usually accesible to the public. It can be viewed here.

A note for under 18s and their parents/guardians
Under 18s will be taught in the same groups as adults. Parents/guardians are welcome to observe the classes. 

This event is a collaboration between the RCO, Durham Cathedral, St. John's College Durham and the Newcastle & District Society of Organists.
