Most organists, even from a fairly early stage in their learning, find themselves needing to play hymns. This class will outline the skills and techniques required to successfully lead congregational hymn singing. It is also suitable for pianists who find themselves playing hymns on the organ.
Please note that this class is on a Sunday and will start at 12:45 and end at 15:45.
RCO Accredited Teacher Roger Carter is known for his superbly clear and supportive service playing tuition. In this class, he will cover all aspects of hymn playing, from learning the notes securely (including use of the pedals), registration and how to change stops between verses, to the play over and how to reflect the words in your playing.
Up to eight places are available. Observer places may be added once five playing places have been booked.
What to prepare
Please learn one or more hymns of your choice from the Common Praise hymn book. You may use another hymn book, provided the same words and tune are included in Common Praise. Click here to view the contents (first line of text and associated tune) of Common Praise.
The venue
St Giles Cripplegate Church is located in the Barbican Centre with access from Fore Stree EC2Y 8DA and via the Barbican Centre. The nearest underground stations are Barbican and Moorgate. Elizabeth Line exits for both can be found at Farringdon and Liverpool Street Elizabeth Line platforms.
