Attend a free Bach recital by renowned organist and teacher Anne Page and stay on for a masterclass. These events mark the 40th anniversary of the acclaimed Peter Collins organ which stands spectacularly on a gallery at the west end of the equally spectacular church of St Peter Mancroft, situated at the heart of Norwich's city centre.
The recital
13:00–14:00, admission free.
Anne Page plays a programme of music by J S Bach from his early, middle and later years.
Click here for full details of the programme.
The masterclass
14:30-17:30, see below for attendance fees and online booking
Attend as a player or observer. Observers will be seated in the nave with a closed-circuit TV screen providing a view of the players, teacher and organ console.
Those wishing to play should prepare music by Bach or a twentieth-century composer influenced by the Organ Reform Movement (Orgelbewegung), as espoused by the Collins organ, and the neoclassical movement in composition. Such composers include Sebastian Forbes, Hindemith, Kenneth Leighton, William Mathias, John McCabe, Lionel Rogg (Rogg's piece The Bells—for a free download click here—is dedicated to Julian Haggett, Organist of St Peter Mancroft Church).
The organ
Masterclass players should note, when choosing non-Bach repertoire, that the top manual is an Echo division rather than a traditional English Swell. Click the link at the top of the page for the specification.
Associated free event - Friday 28th June, 19:00hrs, St Peter Mancroft Church
Baroque Principals (including 40th Anniversary CD launch).
Julian Haggett, Organist of St Peter Mancroft Church, explores the performance capabilities of the Peter Collins organ with reference to the repertoire he has recorded on a new CD. Broadly charting the liturgical year, the disc is centred on works by JS Bach, including his famous Toccata & Fugue in D minor. Works by earlier north German baroque composers Tunder, Buxtehude, and Pachelbel from the south German Baroque school provide context to the central mainstay of the CD, while the works of later admirers of Bach, namely Mendelssohn and Brahms, and the 20th-century English composer Kenneth Leighton show off the wider capability of the organ. The disc will be available at the talk for purchase, price £10.00, and refreshments will be served. Attendance is free of charge but advance booking is required via https://www.ticketsource.co.uk/whats-on/norwich/st-peter-mancroft-church/collins-organ-gala-evening-and-cd-launch/e-vqgmpp.
Fee: Masterclass charges: RCO member (player) £60; Non-member (player) £73; RCO member (observer) £22; Non-member (observer) £27
