Six semi-finalists have been announced in the IAO/RCO Organ Playing Competition 2018.
The selected semi-finalists are:
• Calum Alger (Northampton)
• Calum Anderson (London)
• Alex Jones (Bishops Stortford)
• Rong Rong (Shanghai)
• Marko Sever (London)
• Polina Sosnina (Brentwood)
Under the joint artistic direction of Martin Baker and Steven Grahl, RCO and IAO Presidents respectively, the IAO/RCO Organ Playing Competition is open to organists between the ages of 18 and 26 years. The adjudicators are Martin Baker, Steven Grahl and Prof. Edward Higginbottom, former Director of Music, New College, Oxford.
The six semi-finalists have been chosen from submitted recordings, and will now perform in Cambridge on Wednesday 1 August. The first semi-final is in Sidney Sussex College at 1:30pm, the second in St Catharine's College at 3:20pm.
Three finalists will then perform in Peterborough Cathedral from 7pm on Thursday 2 August.
IAO Executive Vice-President, David Saint, said: "I am delighted that this significant collaboration between the RCO and IAO has attracted such fine players, and I greatly look forward to hearing them in the semi-finals in Cambridge.
“For me, there's nothing more exciting than hearing young musicians pushing themselves to their limit!"
RCO President Martin Baker said: “It has been an honour and a great pleasure to adjudicate the first round of this exciting competition, and along with my fellow adjudicators I am very much looking forward to the semi-finals and final.
“It has been hugely encouraging to hear such a high standard of musicianship from organists at the very early stages of their careers, and I am sure the next two rounds will see that standard reach even greater heights.”
The IAO/RCO Organ Competition semi-finals and finals are being held during the 2018 IAO Music Festival in Peterborough.
