Her Majesty The Queen: A tribute

The Royal College of Organists (RCO) mourns the passing of its patron Her Majesty The Queen, who has died at the age of 96.

The College’s trustees, members and staff offer their sincere condolences to His Majesty The King and the Royal Family.

Her Majesty was Patron of the College throughout her reign, succeeding in the role her father, His Majesty King George VI, who was the College's first Royal Patron.

A particular highlight of The Queen’s patronage in recent years was her involvement in the College’s 150th anniversary celebrations.

Her Majesty and His Royal Highness The Duke of Edinburgh marked the occasion with a special recital at St George’s Chapel, Windsor Castle on Wednesday 9 April 2014.

After the recital, The Queen and The Duke of Edinburgh met College members, supporters and representatives of the governing body and staff.

The Queen was then presented with the College’s highest honour, The RCO Medal, in a special issue to mark her patronage and the occasion of her gracious presence at this recital.

Speaking at the event, then-RCO President Catherine Ennis said: “We are very grateful that Her Majesty The Queen, our Royal Patron, accompanied by His Royal Highness The Duke of Edinburgh, has consented to be present today to crown our anniversary celebrations.

“Our Royal Charter, which was first granted in 1893, is vitally important to us. It defines the essence of our mission, which is, quite simply, to improve standards in organ and choral music in the United Kingdom.”

The College was proud and privileged to work under the gracious patronage of Her Majesty for the entire duration of her reign. We will always be grateful for her unwavering support.
