New Year Honours

The Royal College of Organists (RCO) has welcomed the recognition in the New Year Honours list of organists, composers and others connected to the College and its work.

Following the King’s Coronation in 2023, RCO Vice Patron The Archbishop of Canterbury Justin Welby has been appointed a Knight Grand Cross of the Royal Victorian Order (GCVO).

The composer Judith Weir HonRCO, Master of the King’s Music (pictured receiving the RCO Medal in 2020), whose commissioned orchestral composition Brighter Visions Shine Afar was among the pieces performed in the Abbey before the service began, is appointed a Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire (DBE).

For their services to music: Academy of Ancient Music’s Music Director Laurence Cummings FRCO has been awarded an OBE; Pembroke College Cambridge Director of Music Anna Lapwood ARCO an MBE; and Christopher Kent FRCO and Martin White FRCO(CHM) the British Empire Medal.
