School pupils ‘Go Organic’ with RCO

Nearly 200 schoolchildren and 30 adults from across Upminster were with the RCO at St Laurence’s Church in October to find out more about the pipe organ.

Building on a successful collaboration begun in 2006, Head of Education and Outreach Simon Williams joined church organist Jeremy Allen FRCO and staff from Havering Music School to run a series of sessions for children from both primary and secondary schools in the area.

Throughout Wednesday, 3 October they were introducing primary school pupils to the instrument, including a demonstration, an illustrated talk and a chance for every child to try out the organ for themselves.

And on Thursday lunchtime, 4 October they were encouraging secondary school pupils and members of the local community to “Go Organic” with an informal lecture-recital. Some of the children who had attended on Wednesday asked to come along to this presentation too, swelling the numbers further.

This session included a brief introduction to the history and music of the pipe organ, as well as popular pieces of organ music.

Simon said: “We all enjoyed two excellent days at St Laurence’s, with a great deal of enthusiasm and interest from young and old alike.”
